San Francisco resident Chip needed to trade in his Volkswagen diesel. As a returning Cartelligent client, he gave us a call to help make the leasing process easy.

Q. What made you realize it was time for a new car?

A:  We bought a Jetta Sportwagen TDI (through Cartelligent) in 2011 to replace our Mini Cooper because we had a baby on the way. The Jetta was a great car, but as has been well-documented in the press, it had an illegal pollution problem. So even though the car was relatively young and had less than 45K miles on it, we decided to sell it back to the VW and get something else.

Q. How did you decide on the Mazda CX-5?

A: We test-drove a few options and ended up choosing between the Mazda CX-5 and the VW Alltrack (gasoline engine this time). We selected the CX-5 in the end largely because of the space in the back seat. Both cars drive great, but I’m 6’4″, so I drive with the driver’s seat pushed back as far as it will go. In the CX-5, there’s still room for someone to sit behind me. In the Alltrack…not so much.

Q. Why did you decide to use Cartelligent?

A: As I mentioned above, we bought our Jetta through Cartelligent, and that experience was great, so it only made sense to go that way again. We find the process of negotiating with dealers to be really unpleasant. Why do it if you don’t have to? It’s absolutely worth the fee to have somebody else take care of the process for you — especially if you’re likely to get an as-good or better deal in the end. Frankly, I’m baffled that anyone would buy a car any other way.

Q. What surprised you about the Cartelligent car buying experience?

A: Since we had done it before, nothing really surprised us this time. That said, it’s worth noting that the actual experience of picking up the car seems to be faster and more pleasant through Cartelligent. The last time we bought a car at a dealer, it seemed like they took forever shuffling papers around while we sat there and waited. This might not be entirely the dealer’s fault, but still, why go through that if you don’t have to?
